Wedding Planning: The Venue

When I last wrote a wedding planning post, we had only a date.  Then changed it – twice.  At some point, I even decided maybe I just didn’t need to get married at all.  You see, my crippling anxiety truly comes up with some idiotic problems sometimes.  Making decisions is really hard for me so sometimes I decide to just eliminate the process altogether.  That is what I did with wedding planning…just quit thinking about it.

One night, with drinks flowing, Stuart and I had a serious conversation that made me realize my hesitance to plan a wedding had led to him wondering if I wanted to be with him at all.  I quickly understood where he was coming from and immediately decided to plan a surprise for him.

Back in late summer of 2017, we had visited a craft brewery to check them out as a venue.  We loved the event coordinator, the atmosphere, the location, the aesthetics…it just felt right.  We didn’t book on the spot, but only because we wanted to make sure it was what we wanted.  Looking back, we probably should have just gone for it.

Since then, I changed the date several times and researched venues so much that I couldn’t remember a thing.  I created spreadsheets to track the information I got.  Then one day, in a moment of super appreciation for this man who puts up with me, I thought, I should just book the venue without telling him.  I told my closest friends and they all agreed that it would mean so much and, in the end, put me at ease to know that I at least have that much figured out.

As soon as I had the money together, I chose a date, paid the deposit on the brewery, signed the contract, and put together a card to tell Stuart.  I printed a portion of the contract and put it into a card.  I bought beers from the brewery for us to toast with.  When he got home and settled in, I gave him the card.  It took him a minute to process what was happening.  He was absolutely shocked and delighted.  We are now FULL SPEED planning this wedding, since it’s in November this year!

Next up, finalizing guest list, making wedding party official, and booking photography and catering!  I plan to update here along the way, because it should be interesting!

Week In Review: Rhonda

As you know, we had a lot going on and skipped our Week in Review last week.  So I going to to just hit the highlights.  I had a kid-free two weeks, so it was both relaxing and productive, with a good dose of fun!

Tuesday and Wednesday, I took advantage of my solo status and worked at Starbucks and Buffalo Wild Wings…with shopping breaks.  I got a lot of blogging, working, and writing done, along with a healthy dose of people watching.

Thursday and Friday were spent getting some stuff done around the house and relaxing. I worked on some wedding party stuff, which was really exciting.  Friday night was supposed to be the night that Ashley arrived for a visit, but the airline had different ideas, so we invited Stuart’s coworker over to grill.  Stuart grills a mean steak.

Ashley finally arrived Saturday and we had a wonderful whirlwind day.  Shopping, happy hour, a tattoo for Ashley, and a night at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

I finally got to start wedding dress shopping.  More to come on that later.  Suffice it to say, nothing I tried worked, but I got a better idea of what I wanted.

After a Thursday afternoon spent at Starbucks working, Friday brought about a great surprise – Stuart took the day off to take care of our internet issues.  Once those were cured, we went to visit the marketing coordinator at our preferred venue.  We were happy to determine that it is THE place for us.  I’ll tell you more later!  Later that evening, Stuart surprised me with a date night to our favorite steakhouse.  I can’t recommend enough that you try out The Keg in Arlington for the kind of steak that that nearly gives you an orgasm.

We spent Saturday with all the relaxation.  We stopped by an open house for a rental house.  It was oddly situated in a sketchy neighborhood but was a super nice house.    Stuart once again surprised me as we dropped by our wedding venue for a quick beer (they were about to close).  We came home to grill again, which is always a good idea.

Sunday was our final morning without children, so we had brunch, then went to Stuart’s messy-ass office for him to do some work.  Then we hit the road to get the kids, which is always a grand adventure.

What did you do this week?  Get into anything fun?

Wedding Planning – Introduction

When Stuart and I got engaged this past December, I knew that I wanted to have the whole to-do.  Both of us had gotten married at the courthouse with our previous marriages and while that is lovely and gets the job done, I just wanted something different this time.  I wanted those who love us and support our relationship to be able to witness our union.  At the same time, I also knew that we wanted something personal and intimate that wouldn’t break the bank.

We set a date, then put off wedding planning until after my beach vacation.  I had too much else to focus on and pay for, so it just didn’t make sense to really get into it.  Now, here we are over a month after my vacation and I am just over 300 days away from my wedding date.  What have I planned?  Well, let’s see…

  • Date: CHECK!
  • Venue: Yeah, not so much.
  • Photographer: I have narrowed it down to a couple options.
  • Catering: I have some ideas…ish.
  • Wedding Party: Bride’s, yes.  Groom, uh…pretty sure we haven’t even talked about it.
  • Dress: Ha!
  • Aesthetic: Got that lined up!
  • Guest list: Sort of.  It has been discussed and it’s small enough that I could make the list in 5 minutes.

Safe to say we haven’t done shit.  I bought a planning binder, decided I didn’t like it…bought another.  I picked out my bridal party and they know who they are.  I know what the colors and feel of the wedding are.  I sort of know what I want in a dress and I have some ideas for catering.

We just really need this venue thing nailed down before we can do much else.  And here’s the thing – we have a venue in mind, but we also would prefer to do it in our own backyard….but we don’t have one.  We are trying to find a house and I hope it’s soon so that we CAN figure out if we want to get married there or elsewhere.

What I definitely know about our wedding is it will be intimate, personal, and very us.  In the same way I rage against the MOMachine, I will very much be raging against the wedding industry.  I have zero desire to just go along with and pay for everything I’m “supposed to.”  No thank you.  So you’ll see a lot of DIY and unusual ideas here.

Anyway, I will be posting an update to this series any time I feel like there is something to update on.  First installment will be about my bridal party and that is coming soon!

Anyone else really drag their feet in planning their wedding?

Currently We Are….

Heeey Y’all! Happy Thursday…you know that beautiful day right before FriYAY?! Hope you guys are having a wonderful one, and we’re so glad to see you! Today we wanted to do one of those “Currently…” blog posts. We just think these are cute because it gives you a more candid glimpse into our minds and lives. Hopefully you guys enjoy it! And who knows?  You might just learn something new about us too. 😉

Ashley –

  1. Wanting/Needing: Hmmmm do you have all day? 😉 I’m actually currently feening for some new makeup. I’ve been on a “no buy”, in regards to makeup, for this month…. soo let’s just say that I’m super glad it’s the 20th. What’s on my list to purchase? Well, let me show ya:
  2. Watching: I cannot even remember the last time I sat down and watched something other than a video on YouTube. Oh wait. That’s a lie. I did watch the movie The Arrival a couple weeks ago. It was really good! What am I watching on  YouTube? Well you know…lots of makeup tutorials really. lol I’m slightly obsessed.
  3. Listening To: I’ll let my Amazon Music Play list speak for itself here….
  4. Obsessed With:  My dry shampoo adventures. LOL In an attempt to keep my hair color from fading so quickly AND take better care of my hair in general – I’m trying to utilize dry shampoo more regularly and not wash my hair so much. I typically wash my hair every morning. I went four days without washing prior to Tuesday morning. And today I’m feeling like a badass because I just dry shampooed my beach hair from yesterday and am going with it. hahaha I’m using Batiste (the original). I love it…but I think I’ll switch to the ‘Beautiful Brunette’ variety next time.
  5. Planning For: I have a week vacation coming up next week. So, I’ve been trying to plan something fun that the kids and I can do – you know, something different from our usual activities. I definitely want to do a beach day somewhere different from home. My mom suggested Dauphin Island (in Alabama), because it’s not that far of a drive and the waters should be calmer. Soo yeah. We shall see on that. 🙂

What about you Rhonda? What’s going on with YOU currently?

Rhonda –

  1. Wanting/Needing: Well… Like Ashley said, do you have all day?  I always want makeup and clothes, that’s a given.  But let me give you just one specific beauty item and one specific style item.  I am dying for Tarte’s new unicorn brushes.  Aside from that, I also want AND need some black skinnies (the particular ones below are ASOS).

  • 2. Watching: The better question might be, what am I not watching?   I DVR so much stuff, but my never-fall-behind shows are LIVE! With Kelly, Dateline, This Is Us, Pretty Little Liars, Southern Charm and …..well, okay, I watch a lot y’all.  I love the DVR because it allows me to keep up and watch TV at my convenience.  I watch a lot of reality TV for sure.  Anyway, most recently watched Man With a Plan on the DVR while I cleaned.
  • 3. Listening To: I have been working on my annual girls’ trip playlist, so I have been listening to my iTunes on shuffle and saving to the playlist.  And as you can see in the screenshot, Champagne Problems by Nick Jonas is on at the moment.  I have very eclectic taste in music.
  • 4. Obsessed With: My upcoming trip.  It’s now a week away and I am in full-on prep mode.  Shopping, packing, planning logistics, repacking…. It’s on.  I am so ready to be in paradise.
  • 5. Planning For: Well, I already mentioned the trip for next week and I am definitely planning that, but beyond that, I am planning for my 7-year-old’s 8th birthday party and a WEDDING that is one week and one day away.

What do you currently have going on?
